Fashion and Body Positivity: Finding Clothes That Flatter Your Body Type

Fashion is a powerful form of self-expression, and when it comes to dressing in a way that enhances your natural shape and makes you feel confident, it’s essential to embrace the principles of body positivity. In a world where beauty standards can often feel narrow and unattainable, focusing on body positivity allows you to celebrate your unique body and find clothes that make you look and feel your best. This seems to be popping up a lot around me lately, so I thought I would put together an overview of how to embrace fashion with a body-positive mindset and discover clothing that flatters your body type.

The Importance of Body Positivity

Body positivity is all about accepting and celebrating your body as it is, rather than trying to conform to societal ideals. It's about recognizing that every body is beautiful and worthy of love and respect. Not that anyone should need a reminder, though, here are a few reasons why body positivity is crucial:

  1. Self-Acceptance: Embracing body positivity fosters self-acceptance, allowing you to appreciate your body for what it is rather than focusing on what it’s not. This acceptance is a foundation for overall mental and emotional well-being. I also always come back to a foundation of living in gratitude for what is, for what we have rather than what we have not.

  2. Confidence Boost: When you feel good about your body, it shows. Confidence is an attractive quality and can positively impact every area of your life, from personal relationships to professional endeavors. Clothes, and dressing to highlight your best features can be such an impactful element to boosting confidence!

  3. Mental Health: A positive body image can significantly improve your mental health. It reduces the stress and anxiety associated with trying to fit into a mold that may not be realistic or healthy for you. I will also add that we are our own worst critic and usually do not see ourselves the way others do. If we can move more towards believing we are beautiful no matter what, who is that hurting?

  4. Authentic Self-Expression: When you embrace your body, you can dress in ways that truly reflect your personality and style, rather than hiding behind clothes that are meant to disguise or alter your shape.

Finding Clothes That Flatter Your Body Type

Once you’ve embraced a body-positive mindset, or have just decided you are over being so hard on yourself, the next step is to find clothes that enhance your natural shape. Now for the fun part, here are some tips for dressing for different body types:

1. Hourglass Shape

If you have an hourglass shape, your shoulders and hips are roughly the same width, with a well-defined waist. To highlight your curves:

  • Emphasize the Waist: Wear belts and dresses that cinch at the waist.

  • Fitted Clothing: Choose fitted tops and skirts that showcase your curves. Rock the bodycon trend!

  • V-Necklines: Opt for V-neck tops and dresses to elongate your torso.

2. Pear Shape

Pear-shaped bodies have wider hips compared to shoulders, with a well-defined waist. To balance your proportions:

  • A-Line Skirts and Dresses: These styles skim over the hips and draw attention to your waist.

  • Bold Tops: Wear bright colors or patterns on top to draw the eye upward.

  • Structured Jackets: Opt for jackets with shoulder pads or detailing to add width to your upper body.

3. Apple Shape

Apple-shaped bodies carry weight around the midsection, with slimmer legs and arms. To create a balanced look:

  • Empire Waistlines: Dresses and tops with an empire waistline draw attention away from the midsection.

  • Flowy Fabrics: Choose fabrics that drape gracefully over your midsection.

  • V-Neck and Scoop Necklines: These necklines elongate your upper body and draw attention upward.

4. Rectangle Shape

Rectangle-shaped bodies have a balanced shoulder and hip width with little definition at the waist. To create curves:

  • Peplum Tops: These add volume to the hips and create a defined waist.

  • Belts: Use belts to cinch the waist and add definition.

  • Ruffles and Layers: Opt for tops and dresses with ruffles or layers to add dimension.

5. Heart Shape

Heart shape, also known as Inverted triangle, bodies have broader shoulders compared to hips. To balance your shape:

  • A-Line and Flared Skirts: These styles add volume to the hips and balance the shoulders.

  • V-Necklines: Opt for V-neck tops to narrow the shoulders.

  • Dark Colors on Top: Darker colors on top can minimize the width of the shoulders.

Embracing Your Unique Style & Shape

Ultimately, the most important aspect of dressing for your body type is to wear what makes you feel good. Fashion should be fun and empowering, not restrictive or stressful. Here are a few more tips to keep in mind:

  • Experiment: Don’t be afraid to try new styles and trends. You never know what might make you feel amazing until you try it. This includes sizes!! Nothing is created equal, so try sizing up and down in styles you love and you may find an unexpected surprise, like the perfect oversized pant or jacket.

  • Tailoring: Consider having your clothes tailored. A little alteration can make a huge difference in how your clothes fit and flatter your body, making a piece more personal and custom to you.

  • Quality Over Quantity: Invest in quality pieces that make you feel confident and comfortable, rather than filling your wardrobe with items that don’t serve you and won’t last.

Fashion and body positivity go hand in hand. By embracing your body as it is and finding clothes that flatter your natural shape, you can uplift your confidence and express your true style.

Remember, the goal is not to fit into a specific mold but to celebrate your beautiful, unique self. So, go ahead and explore fashion and let your wardrobe be a reflection of your inner joy and gratitude for the body that serves you.
